How to build a Granny Flat for the in-laws the right way!

If there is one thing we are seeing more of as we progress into the 2020s, it's multi-generational living. In many cases its kids moving back in with parents, in a bid to get ahead on a deposit for a home loan without the burden of paying rent. However, it's not uncommon these days to see the reverse, with mum and dad moving in with the kids.

In the case of Richard and his father-in-law Ulrich, that's exactly what they decided to do.

The family decided to embark on the journey of building a YZY Granny Flat for their father-in-law after he had made the decision to take advantage of the governments downsizing into superannuation scheme, after selling his home in Newcastle. Richard and his wife had decided to make the most of the available space on their block and set about building an Iceland 2 Bedroom Granny Flat.

After meticulously researching their options, Richard and Ulrich's ultimate decision to proceed with a YZY Granny Flat was heavily based around the overall quality, fast turnaround, design aesthetics, thermal properties, and flexibility in the customisation of the final product.

The desired location of the 2 Bedroom Granny Flat presented with some challenges, due to an existing retaining wall. However, the decision to transition from the standard timber subfloor to a steel design was a relatively simple solution.

From the day of delivery, the team at Canberra Outdoor Structures (YZY Authorised ACT Installer) set out on a 2-day build constructing the Granny Flats subfloor and then an additional 5 days of installation to see the Iceland through to lock-up stage (Lock up = Completed Building, without the fit-out: ie Bathroom, Kitchen, Painting, etc).

Ulrich, the Granny Flats proud new owner, commented that the overall quality of the build, is what attracted him to the YZY design and he noted that, " The ceiling height is really quite substantial and it means that it feels very spacious, much more spacious than the actual floor plan would suggest."

The Iceland's unique design and skillion roofline allow for ultra-high ceilings, a substantial galley kitchen including ample living and dining space. Ulrich's choice of modern flooring has given his new home a feeling of living in what he describes as a "luxury retreat."
